In short: From Scandinavian origins to the heart of the Frankish empire, the Kingdom of Burgundy was never a single, static entity. It was a series of successive states, defined by migrations, Roman alliances, and the ambitious partitions of Europe's most powerful dynasties.

The Burgundian story began with a migration. Originally a Scandinavian people from the southern shores of the Baltic Sea—near the island of Bornholm—the Burgundians moved to the Vistula River valley by the 1st century CE. Driven by pressure from the Gepidae, they migrated westward, eventually serving as Roman foederati near the Rhine. By the early 5th century, they had established a powerful kingdom centered on Sapaudia, a region encompassing modern western Switzerland and northeastern France.

The kingdom reached its zenith under King Gundobad (474–516). A skilled lawgiver, he implemented a dual legal system: the Lex Gundobada for the Burgundians and the Lex Romana Burgundionum for his Gallo-Roman subjects. However, the era of independence was short-lived. Following conflicts with the Frankish Merovingian dynasty, the kingdom was annexed by the Franks in 534 after the defeat of King Godomar.

As the centuries progressed, 'Burgundy' became a fragmented political label. The Carolingian era saw the territory split into Upper and Lower Burgundy, and even Provence. While the Duchy of Burgundy eventually became a premier peerage of the French kingdom, other branches, like the County of Burgundy, maintained distinct identities. The later Valois Dukes, such as Philip the Bold and Charles the Bold, transformed the region into a massive, multi-national state spanning from the Netherlands to the Alps, attempting to bridge the gap between northern and southern territories through strategic marriages and conquest.
