How a Polish Hotel Manager Built Europe's Most Spectacle-Driven Mixed Martial Arts Empire
In short: Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki, known as KSW, transformed from a local meeting of two martial arts enthusiasts into a premier European fighting powerhouse. By prioritizing massive, infrequent stadium shows over the high-volume model of the UFC, KSW has redefined the spectacle of combat sports, drawing record-breaking crowds across the continent.
The organization originated in 2002 when Martin Lewandowski, then a hotel manager in Warsaw, met Maciej Kawulski, an organizer of sports expos. Sharing a background in martial arts, the pair launched their first show eighteen months later. Unlike other major global promotions that rely on frequent events, KSW adopted a strategy centered on creating high-production, stacked cards that emphasize grand spectacle. This approach reached a peak in 2017 with KSW 39: Colosseum, which drew 57,776 fans, marking the largest live attendance for an MMA event in European history and the second-largest globally at the time.
KSW is historically defined by its tournament structure, featuring four and eight-man brackets. While these originally concluded in a single night, the format evolved after KSW X - Dekalog, with finals eventually moving to subsequent events. The promotion maintains a distinct identity through its own elite fight team, which has included notable names like Mamed Khalidov and Jan Błachowicz. To expand its reach, KSW has secured long-term streaming partnerships, such as the 2021 agreement with Viaplay to increase output to 12 events annually, and has integrated corporate title sponsorship, most notably with the fintech firm XTB.
Beyond traditional MMA, the organization continues to innovate its programming. In 2024, the XTB KSW Epic gala experimented with alternative combat formulas, featuring a boxing match between Mamed Chalidow and Tomasz Adamek. The federation also formalised its legacy in 2023 by establishing a Hall of Fame, inducting former commentator and inaugural tournament champion Łukasz Jurkowski. With 126 events held as of September 2026, KSW remains a central pillar of European combat sports, balancing its roots in tournament-style competition with the demands of modern, high-stakes sports entertainment.
