How a nonprofit cooperative became the primary pulse of Japanese news media
In short: Established in the wake of World War II, Kyodo News operates as a nonprofit cooperative that serves nearly every major media outlet in Japan. With a reach spanning 50 million subscribers, this agency acts as the central nervous system for Japanese journalism, connecting local reporting to a global audience.
Kyodo News was founded in November 1945 by Furuno Inosuke, the former president of the Domei News Agency. Its creation followed the dissolution of Domei in the aftermath of World War II, marking a structural shift in how news was gathered and disseminated across the country. Today, the agency functions as a nonprofit cooperative based in Minato, Tokyo, ensuring that its reporting reaches almost all television, radio, and newspaper networks throughout Japan.
The scale of the operation is significant, employing over 1,000 journalists and photographers who feed a vast network of information. This reach is further bolstered by news exchange agreements with more than 70 international media outlets, allowing for a constant flow of intelligence across borders. To manage its commercial interests, the agency established K. K. Kyodo News in 1972, and later, in 1982, launched Kyodo News International, which operates out of Rockefeller Center in New York City to provide over 200 reports to international media.
Adaptability remains a core component of the agency's strategy. Its digital presence is multilingual, offering content in Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and English. In a recent move to modernize its international footprint, the agency rebranded its English-language online service in July 2025. Formerly known as Kyodo News Plus, the platform is now titled Japan Wire by Kyodo News. This evolution reflects the agency's ongoing effort to maintain its status as a primary source of information for both domestic subscribers and the global community, bridging the gap between local Japanese events and international news cycles.
