From Fairy Liquid child star to a record-breaking medical negligence settlement
In short: Leslie Ash began her career at age four, but her path from iconic sitcom roles to tabloid fodder and a historic legal battle reveals the harsh reality of fame. After a botched cosmetic procedure and a life-altering hospital infection, she became a symbol of both media scrutiny and medical accountability.
Born in 1960, Leslie Ash first appeared on British television in 1964 as a child in a Fairy Liquid advertisement. She transitioned into a successful acting career, gaining prominence in the 1979 film Quadrophenia and later as a regular in the popular BBC sitcom Men Behaving Badly. Her career spanned decades, including music video appearances for Dire Straits and Iron Maiden, and a stint as a co-presenter on Channel 4's The Tube.
Ash's public image faced intense scrutiny in her 40s after a cosmetic procedure involving silicone injections resulted in permanent lip swelling, a condition the press labeled the trout pout. She later criticized the media's relentless ridicule, noting that the public felt comfortable mocking her appearance in a way they would never treat a physical disability. This period of her life was marked by both professional work in advertisements and dramas, and significant personal distress caused by the media's focus on her physical changes.
In 2004, Ash was hospitalized for cracked ribs, but a subsequent Staphylococcus aureus infection led to a loss of feeling in her legs. In 2008, she reached an out-of-court settlement with the hospital for £5 million, a record-breaking sum for a hospital-acquired infection at the time. The NHS Litigation Authority justified the payment based on her past and projected future earnings. Beyond her health battles, Ash and her husband, Lee Chapman, were also victims of illegal voicemail interception, eventually securing an apology and an undisclosed settlement from the News of the World in 2011.
