In short: Formed in 1985, L7 emerged from the Los Angeles art punk scene to become a powerhouse of the grunge era. By selecting a name that slang-defined a square, they intentionally avoided gendered labels, carving out a space for themselves as musicians rather than just a novelty all-female act.

L7 was founded by Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner, who met in 1984 through the cultural network of LA Weekly. Their early years in Los Angeles were marked by a revolving cast of musicians until the lineup stabilized in 1989 with the addition of drummer Demetra Plakas and bassist Jennifer Finch. While frequently grouped with the grunge and riot grrrl movements of the late 1980s and early 1990s, the band operated as an outlier to both, maintaining a distinct, heavy sound characterized by the twin-guitar interplay of Sparks and Gardner.

The band achieved significant commercial success with their 1992 album Bricks Are Heavy, produced by Butch Vig. The single Pretend We're Dead became a staple of alternative radio, peaking at number 8 on the US Billboard Modern Rock chart. Despite their success, the group was known for a raw, confrontational stage presence. During a 1992 performance at the Reading Festival, Sparks famously threw a used tampon into a restless crowd, an act that cemented their reputation for defiance. This intensity extended to their political activism; in 1991, they co-founded Rock for Choice, a concert series designed to fund legal support for those impacted by anti-abortion violence.

Following a period of waning sales and an indefinite hiatus starting in 2001, the band reunited in 2014. They continued to tour globally and released new material, including the 2019 album Scatter the Rats. In 2026, the band faced a profound loss when bassist Jennifer Finch died at age 59 following a diagnosis of aggressive brain cancer. Despite this tragedy, the group announced that former bassist Janis Tanaka would return for their final tour, The Last Hurrah 2026, marking the end of a four-decade career that challenged the music industry's treatment of women.
