How a road sign in Olympia, Washington, birthed an iconic feminist punk rock band
In short: Sleater-Kinney emerged from the 1990s riot grrrl movement, blending aggressive sound with sharp social commentary. Named after a local street, the band evolved from a raw, unrefined duo into a critically acclaimed powerhouse. Their journey spans decades of experimentation, hiatuses, and personal tragedy, redefining the boundaries of modern indie rock.
Formed in Olympia, Washington, in 1994, Sleater-Kinney began as a collaboration between Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein. The pair, formerly of the bands Heavens to Betsy and Excuse 17, chose their name from a street sign near an Interstate 5 exit in Lacey, Washington. The road itself was named for 19th-century families in the South Bay neighborhood. Their early sound was defined by Tucker’s fierce, caterwauling vocals and chugging rhythm guitar, paired with Brownstein’s jagged lead style.
The band’s trajectory shifted significantly with the 1997 release of Dig Me Out, which introduced drummer Janet Weiss and marked their move to the independent label Kill Rock Stars. Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, the group gained acclaim for albums like The Hot Rock and One Beat, the latter of which incorporated synthesizers and horns while addressing themes of motherhood and the September 11 attacks. By 2005, they embraced a denser, more improvisational sound on The Woods, produced by Dave Fridmann.
Internal pressures and personal challenges led to an indefinite hiatus in 2006, following a breakdown during a European tour. During this interval, members pursued solo projects and other creative outlets, including Brownstein’s work on the television series Portlandia. The band reunited in 2013, releasing No Cities to Love in 2015. Following the 2019 departure of Weiss, Tucker and Brownstein continued as a duo. Their 2024 album, Little Rope, was deeply influenced by the sudden loss of Brownstein’s mother and stepfather in an Italian car accident, marking the latest chapter in their enduring career.
