In short: Founded by the immortal Ra's al Ghul, this secret society of supervillains has evolved from a simple group of mercenaries into a sprawling network of factions. Whether acting as a global catalyst for civilization's reformation or a brutal tool for political power, the League remains Batman's most persistent, enigmatic adversary.

First appearing in DC Comics in 1968, the League of Assassins was formally named in 1970. While its origins are often linked to Ra's al Ghul, who founded the group in 1013 A.D. to serve as the protective fang for his head, the organization's structure has been fluid. It has frequently split into specialized branches, including the League of Shadows, which supports eco-terrorist agendas, and the League of Lazarus, which guards supernatural restorative pools used to extend life.

The leadership of the League has been marked by internal power struggles and shifting loyalties. Early figures like Ebeneezer Darrk and the Sensei attempted to steer the organization away from Ra's' control, often utilizing brutal methods or brainwashing techniques to secure operatives like Bronze Tiger. Later, Ra's' daughters, Talia al Ghul and Nyssa Raatko, took command, with Talia eventually integrating genetic experiments like Man-Bat Commandos into the group's ranks. The organization's goals have similarly evolved, ranging from selling mercenary services for political influence to the radical culling of the world's weak and wicked.

The League's training regimen is notoriously severe, requiring recruits to prepare their own graves before beginning operations. This focus on creating the ultimate warrior led to the recruitment of legendary fighters such as Lady Shiva and the training of Cassandra Cain. Despite constant infighting, splinter groups, and the rise of rival organizations like Leviathan, the League persists as a pervasive threat. Its history remains a patchwork of retcons and reboots, reflecting the ever-changing nature of the DC Universe itself.
