From tobacco plantations to the halls of power: the dynasty that shaped America
In short: One immigrant arrived in Virginia in 1639 and established a lineage that would define American politics. From signing the Declaration of Independence to commanding armies in the Civil War, the Lee family has left an indelible mark on the nation's history.
The American Lee dynasty began with Richard Lee I, known as 'The Immigrant,' who settled in the Virginia Colony in 1639. He built a massive fortune through tobacco plantations managed by enslaved Africans. While some genealogical studies, such as one by William Thorndale in 1988, suggested his origins might lie in Worcester rather than Shropshire, other researchers like Alan Nicholls have used contemporary documents to defend the family's English ancestral links.
The family's influence peaked during the nation's formative years. Brothers Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee were both signers of the Declaration of Independence. Richard Henry Lee also served as President of the Continental Congress and as one of Virginia's first U.S. Senators. Other prominent figures included 'Light-Horse Harry' Lee, a decorated Revolutionary War officer and Governor of Virginia, and Thomas Sim Lee, who served as Governor of Maryland.
The family's legacy is inextricably linked to the American Civil War through General Robert E. Lee, commander of the Army of Neutron Virginia. His life and the lives of his many relatives, including several other Confederate generals, remain central to the study of the conflict. Beyond the battlefield, the family's reach extended into the 20th century, with members serving as Maryland Lieutenant Governors and even representing the United States at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Today, the Society of the Lees of Virginia, established in 1921, works to preserve this complex heritage. They manage historical sites like Stratford Hall and maintain the Lee Family Digital Archive to ensure that the multifaceted story of this political and military lineage is accurately documented for future generations.
