From an eleven-student graduating class to the NFL: the rise of Leighton Vander Esch
In short: Leighton Vander Esch transitioned from an eight-man football star in rural Idaho to a standout NFL linebacker. Despite a record-breaking rookie season with the Dallas Cowboys, his professional career was defined by persistent neck injuries, ultimately leading to his retirement after six seasons in the league at age 28.
Born in Riggins, Idaho, in 1996, Vander Esch grew up in a town where his high school graduating class numbered just eleven students. He excelled in eight-man football, basketball, and track, eventually walking on at Boise State University. His collegiate trajectory was marked by a breakout junior season in 2017, where he earned Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year honors after recording 141 tackles. This performance propelled him to the 2018 NFL draft, where he was selected 19th overall by the Dallas Cowboys.
Vander Esch made an immediate impact in the NFL, setting a franchise rookie record with 140 combined tackles during the 2018 season. His performance earned him Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors, establishing him as a central figure in the Cowboys' defense. However, his professional tenure was frequently interrupted by physical setbacks. His 2019 season was curtailed by a nerve issue in his neck requiring surgery, and he suffered a broken collarbone early in the 2020 campaign. These injuries became a recurring theme, limiting his availability and impacting his long-term durability.
The physical toll of the game eventually necessitated his departure from professional football. After re-signing with the Cowboys on a two-year deal in 2023, he suffered another significant neck injury during an October game against the San Francisco 49ers. By November 2023, it was confirmed he would miss the remainder of the season. In March 2024, the Cowboys released him, and he announced his retirement three days later, citing medical reasons related to his history of neck issues. His career remains a study in rapid ascent and the harsh physical realities of elite-level football.
