The eccentric coach known as the Mad Hatter who won it all
In short: Les Miles is a football figure defined by extremes. Known for his signature white cap and unconventional play-calling, he rose from assistant roles to leading the LSU Tigers to a national championship, navigating through hurricane-disrupted seasons and intense media speculation regarding his future.
Born in 1953, Leslie Edwin Miles built a coaching career characterized by both significant success and high-profile eccentricity. After playing for the University of Michigan under Bo Schembechler, Miles transitioned into coaching, serving as an assistant for the Wolverines, the Colorado Buffaloes, and the Dallas Cowboys. His tenure as a head coach began at Oklahoma State in 2001, where he achieved several winning seasons and bowl appearances before moving to Louisiana State University (LSU) in 2005.
Miles's time at LSU was marked by both triumph and turbulence. In 2005, his debut season was complicated by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, which forced the Tigers to play some home games in Tempe. Despite these disruptions, Miles led the team to an 11–2 record and a Peach Bowl victory. His most significant achievement came in 2007, when he guided LSU to a BCS National Championship victory over Ohio State. This success was achieved despite a season filled with media distractions, including incorrect reports from ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit suggesting Miles was leaving for Michigan.
The 'Mad Hatter' nickname stems from his unpredictable and often unconventional play-calling habits, which became a hallmark of his nationally televised games. While his tenure at LSU saw him become the school's second-winningest coach, it ended in 2016 following an 18–13 loss to Auburn. Miles later moved to the University of Kansas in 2018, signing a five-year, $13.8 million contract, where he faced the challenge of rebuilding a program that had struggled with winless seasons in the past.
