From a career-ending injury to the elite ranks of the UFC featherweight division
In short: Lerone Murphy’s path to professional mixed martial arts was nearly derailed twice by physical trauma. After a serious knee injury at age 16 ended his football ambitions, a later shooting left him with permanent facial injuries and a bullet shard in his tongue. Today, he stands as one of the world's top featherweights.
He had previously undergone trials with Liverpool F.C. and trained with Stockport County and FC United. Following this, he turned to mixed martial arts, beginning his professional journey at FCC 15. He was the nephew of the late Manchester boxing trainer Oliver Harrison. This connection to the sport likely influenced his transition into combat sports.
Murphy's career has been marked by extreme resilience following life-threatening events. In May 2013, he was shot by a gunman in Manchester, sustaining two hits to his face and neck that required prosthetic teeth and left a permanent bullet shard in his tongue. In May 2022, he was also involved in a cycling accident where he was hit by a car and nearly bled to death. These traumatic incidents highlight the immense physical and mental fortitude required for his profession. Such adversity has become a defining element of his personal history.
Following his 7 September 2019 UFC debut versus Zubaira Tukhugov, Murphy has established himself as a regular in the featherweight class. He has secured notable victories over Ricardo Ramos, Douglas Silva de Andrade, and Aaron Pico. As of 3 February 2026, he holds the #3 spot in the Meta UFC featherweight rankings. His undefeated streak of nine fights was recently broken by a majority decision loss to Movsar Evloev on 21 March 2026, a bout where Evloev received a point deduction in the fourth round for repeated groin strikes. His technical skill has been recognised through several post-fight awards. He has earned multiple Performance of the Night honours and a Fight of the Night bonus.
