Finland's premier ice hockey league evolved from an amateur competition into a professional powerhouse.
In short: Established in 1975 to replace the amateur SM-sarja, the Liiga has grown into one of Europe's top professional ice hockey leagues. Today, it features 16 teams, a sophisticated playoff structure, and a rich tradition of honoring legends through its uniquely named championship trophies and individual player awards.
The Liiga, officially known as SM-liiga in Finnish, was founded in 1975 to transition Finnish ice hockey from its amateur roots into a professional era. Initially comprising 10 clubs, the league has undergone significant structural changes over the decades. It expanded to 12 teams by the 1988–89 season and eventually reached its current 16-team format for the 2024–25 season. Kalervo Kummola served as the league's inaugural chief executive officer until 1987, overseeing the introduction of playoffs, which became a staple of the competition from its first season.
The league operates independently of the Finnish Ice Hockey Association, though the two maintain a cooperative agreement. Its competitive structure is rigorous: teams play 60 regular-season matches, with points awarded for regulation wins, overtime results, and shootouts. The top four teams advance directly to the quarter-finals, while teams ranked fifth through twelfth compete in preliminary best-of-five play-offs to secure the remaining spots. The ultimate prize is the Kanada-malja, or 'Canada Bowl,' awarded to the playoff champion.
Beyond domestic glory, the Liiga is recognized as a premier European league, currently ranked third in Europe for the 2024–25 season. This standing allows its top four teams to compete in the Champions Hockey League. The league also maintains a strong cultural identity; in 1995, its various trophies were renamed to honor Finnish hockey legends, replacing previous sponsor-based titles. While the league was closed to promotion and relegation between 2000 and 2024, the recent reintroduction of these dynamics marks a return to a more open, meritocratic system for Finnish clubs.
