From humble beginnings to European history: the century-long rise of Kuopion Palloseura
In short: Founded in 1923, Finland's Kuopion Palloseura has evolved from a local friendly squad into a dominant force in Nordic football. After enduring financial instability and relegation in the 1990s, the club achieved a historic league and cup double in 2024 and recently became the first Finnish side to reach European knockout stages.
Kuopion Palloseura, widely known as KuPS, was established on 16 March 1923 at Kuopion Seurahuone. Initially competing in friendly matches throughout the 1920s, the club spent the following decades climbing the Finnish football hierarchy. A pivotal moment occurred in 1949 when the team secured promotion to the top tier, beginning a remarkable 44-season tenure in the league. This period included a golden era between the 1950s and 1970s, during which the club claimed five of its eight total championship titles.
The club's identity has shifted significantly over time. Originally playing in black and green striped shirts, the team adopted its iconic yellow and black color scheme in 1935, the same year it transitioned from the abbreviation KPS to KuPS. Despite this early success, the 1990s brought severe financial hardship, forcing the team down to the third tier. However, the club rebounded in the 21st century, establishing a consistent presence in the top-flight Veikkausliiga since 2008 and maintaining a top-three league finish every year since 2017.
Recent years have marked the most successful chapter in the club's history. Under the guidance of coach Jani Honkavaara, KuPS secured a league and cup double in 2024. This momentum carried into the 2025 season, where they captured their eighth championship. Internationally, the club made history by reaching the league phase of the 2025–26 UEFA Conference League, eventually becoming the first Finnish team to advance into the knockout phase play-offs. Beyond the pitch, the club has become a prolific developer of talent, recently setting record transfer fees for players like Otto Ruoppi and Mohamed Toure, the latter moving to FC Viktoria Plzeň for €1.5 million in early 2026.
