In short: He was a soldier, a terrorist, and a child mercenary. Born from a top-secret cloning project, Liquid Snake was designed to be the polar opposite of his brother, Solid Snake. But behind the bitter feud over recessive genes lies a complex legacy of identity, possession, and biological warfare.

Created by Hideo Kojima for the 1998 game Metal Gear Solid, Liquid Snake is a product of the 'Les Enfants Terribles' project, a covert government initiative to clone the legendary soldier Big Boss. Alongside his brothers, Solid Snake and Solidus Snake, Liquid was engineered to be a biological mirror to the protagonist. Kojima chose the name 'Liquid' to represent a state of matter in direct opposition to 'Solid', illustrating their roles as antagonist and protagonist despite their shared lineage.

Liquid's motivations were driven by a deep-seated resentment regarding his genetic inheritance. He believed that while Solid Snake inherited the superior dominant genes of Big Boss, he had been left with the inferior recessive traits. In reality, the opposite was true. This bitterness fueled his leadership of the FOXHOUND unit and his takeover of a nuclear disposal facility in Alaska, where he sought to use Big Boss's remains to treat the mutations of his 'Genome Army'.

The character's influence extends far beyond his death from the FOXDIE virus. Through the transplantation of his arm onto Revolver Ocelot, Liquid's personality and voice began to manifest in his rival. This biological haunting continued through various installments, even as his younger self, a child mercenary known as Eli, operated in Africa. Whether as a mastermind or a wayward child, Liquid remains a central figure in a sprawling saga of genetic destiny and psychological manipulation.
