The soldier who was born from a government project to create the perfect weapon
In short: He is a legendary stealth operative, but his very existence is a scientific anomaly. Created through the 'Les Enfants Terribles' project, Solid Snake is one of three clones of the soldier Big Boss. His life is a race against his own manipulated DNA, fighting a war against his own genetic legacy.
Known by his real name, David, Solid Snake is a central protagonist in Konami's Metal Gear series, created by Hideo Kojima. Originally a rookie recruit for the elite FOXHOUND unit, his career evolved from simple infiltration missions in Outer Heaven to complex espionage involving nuclear-armed mecha known as Metal Gear. His identity is deeply tied to his mentor, Big Boss, and his existence is defined by a complex genetic rivalry with his twin brother, Liquid Snake.
The revelation of Snake's origins in Metal Gear Solid changed the series' trajectory. He is one of three clones conceived during the 'Les Enfants Terribles' government project, which aimed to engineer the perfect soldier. This genetic manipulation carries a heavy biological cost. In Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Snake—often referred to as 'Old Snake'—faces rapid aging. This accelerated senescence was an intentional part of the cloning process, ensuring his DNA could not be harvested for further research.
Despite his reputation as a hardened, emotionless loner with an IQ of 180, Snake possesses a deeply human side. He is known for his self-sacrificing nature and a belief that friendship and love can exist even on a battlefield. His character is defined by a paradox: while he is a master of stealth and violence, he maintains a personal philosophy that violence is not glorious. This complex morality, paired with the voice acting of Akio Ōtsuka and David Hayter, has cemented him as one of the most iconic figures in video game history.
