In short: The devices we use daily rely on invisible modems to bridge the gap between our screens and the world. Qualcomm’s hardware has transitioned through distinct branding eras, evolving from the Gobi series to the current Snapdragon X-series to power everything from watches to cars.

Qualcomm's modem architecture has undergone significant shifts in both branding and technical capability. Before adopting the Snapdragon X-series branding for its current line of 4G LTE modems, the company utilized the Gobi series. These modems serve as the essential communication engines for a vast array of hardware, including phones, tablets, laptops, watches, and even automobiles. These components are integrated into various mobile platforms, including the Snapdragon 400 and 600 series. This integration allows for seamless communication across diverse device types.

The technical progression of these modems is marked by increasing data throughput and sophisticated carrier aggregation. Early iterations, such as those paired with the Snapdragon 412 or 415 processors, provided much lower speeds compared to modern high-end chipsets. For instance, while some early LTE Category 4 configurations offered downlink speeds of 150 Mbit/s, more advanced iterations like the Snapdragon X12 LTE Modem, paired with the Snapdragon 820/821 processors, reached downlink speeds of 800 Mbit/s via LTE Category 15. Advanced configurations now support up to 256 QAM modulation. Furthermore, modern systems can utilize up to six spatial streams for enhanced performance.

This evolution also involves a complex interplay of cellular technologies. While modern modems focus on 4G LTE and 5G NR, they maintain compatibility with a wide range of legacy standards. This includes WCDMA variants like DC-HSDPA and DC-HSUPA, as well as older technologies such as CDMA 1x, EV-DO, and GSM/EDGE. This backward compatibility ensures that as hardware advances, the underlying connectivity remains robust across different network generations. The technology also incorporates LTE-U and LWA to improve network efficiency. Additionally, Voice over LTE has become a standard feature for modern connectivity.
