The hidden evolution of the software powering Nokia's classic feature phones
In short: While smartphones capture the headlines, a quieter technological shift has been occurring in the world of feature phones. From MediaTek chips to the modern Mocor RTOS, the Series 30+ platform has undergone a fundamental structural transformation, changing how even the simplest mobile devices connect to the modern web.
The Series 3/S30+ lineage began in September 2013 with the Nokia 108, serving as the primary successor to the Series 30 and 40 platforms. In its early years, the architecture relied on MediaTek chips running MAUI software. This era allowed for specific capabilities, such as the MAUI Runtime Environment (MRE) and J2ME Java applications, though support for these began to fade as the platform transitioned. Early models like the Nokia 220 and 225, both released in 2014, featured 2.4-inch and 2.8-inch displays respectively. These devices often included the Nokia Xpress browser and GPRS connectivity.
A significant architectural shift occurred around 2020. Most modern S30+ devices, including all 4G models, moved away from MediaTek MAUI to Unisoc chips running on top of the Mocor RTOS. This transition changed the software's fundamental compatibility; for instance, newer Mocor-based models can no longer run MRE software. This shift was also reflected in the hardware, as seen in the 2019 Nokia 3310 3G, which was among the first to utilize the Mocor RTOS. The transition was marked by specific milestones, such as the 2019 Nokia 3310 3G, which introduced 3G support to the platform. This period also saw the 2020 Nokia 5310 emerge as the final device to maintain MRE application support.
Despite being more limited than platforms like KaiOS, recent innovations have brought modern connectivity to these basic devices. Through a partnership with CloudMosa starting in late 2023, HMD introduced 'Cloud Phone' technology. This allows S30+ devices, such as the 2023 Nokia 110 4G, to access modern web applications like YouTube, TikTok, and Google Sign-in via the cloud. While this brings the 2013-era lineage into the modern era, the technology remains geographically restricted, as it was not supported in China or Europe. The Nokia 110 4G, released in 2023, was the first to implement these Cloud Apps. This expansion of utility continues with newer 4G models like the Nokia 215 4G and Nokia 3210, launched in April 2024.
