How a romantic comedy approach transformed the legend of Superman
In short: When developers pitched a new Superman series to ABC, they weren't looking for a superhero epic. Instead, they aimed for a romantic comedy, prioritizing the relationship between Lois Lane and Clark Kent over traditional action. This shift in focus would define a unique era of the Man of Steel's television history.
Developed by Deborah Joy LeVine, the series aired on ABC between September 1993 and June 1997. Unlike many superhero adaptations, the show was designed with a specific demographic in mind: it was aimed at women rather than traditional comic book fans. To achieve this, LeVine focused on the romance between Clark Kent and Lois Lane, often treating Clark's alter ego, Superman, as a secondary element to their developing relationship.
This narrative shift required a departure from established tropes. For instance, the series reversed the traditional hairstyles of the characters, giving Superman a slicked-back look while allowing Clark's fringe to fall naturally. The show also modernized the character of Lex Luthor, portraying him as a corrupt corporate tycoon rather than the classic mad scientist. This change allowed Luthor to serve as a romantic rival to Clark, played by John Shea, adding layers of tension to the central love story.
The production faced various challenges and shifts in direction. While the first season saw Clark struggle to balance his secret identity with his life in Metropolis, the second season saw a significant overhaul. Following a disappointing initial rating of 65th out of 132 programs, ABC renewed the series, and the production team shifted toward more action and elaborate visual effects. By the third season, the show found significant success, averaging over 18 million viewers per episode and ranking 44th in its season.
