In short: Created in 1987, Lojban is a constructed language built to explore the intersection of human thought and machine logic. By removing grammatical ambiguity, it aims to provide a precise, speakable tool for communication, machine translation, and creative expression, offering a unique framework for classifying the world around us.

Lojban emerged from the Logical Language Group as a successor to Loglan, a project originally conceived by James Cooke Brown in 1955 to test the theory of linguistic relativity. While Loglan sought to examine how language influences thought, its development was hampered by copyright disputes over its components. In 1987, a group of users formed the Logical Language Group in Washington, D.C., to create a new, freely available lexicon while maintaining the goal of a syntactically unambiguous language.

The language’s root words, or gismu, were algorithmically derived from the six most widely spoken languages as of 1987: Mandarin, English, Hindi, Spanish, Russian, and Arabic. This process ensured a phonetic balance, primarily favoring English and Mandarin. By 1997, the group finalized the baseline grammar and lexicon in 'The Complete Lojban Language.' Following a five-year 'freeze' period that ended in 2002, the language has been open for community-led expansion, allowing speakers to create new idioms and words.

Beyond its logical structure, Lojban is notable for its sophisticated system of emotional and metalinguistic indicators. These markers allow speakers to separate factual statements from emotional context, potentially enabling more precise communication than natural languages. While it is a 'logical' language, it does not impose a single, rigid classification of the universe. Instead, it offers flexible word combinations, allowing users to explore multiple ways of describing reality. Today, it is used in text and voice chats, and has even seen partial implementation in media like Minecraft, serving as an intellectual device for those interested in the boundaries of language and logic.
