In short: Once spoken by 12,000 people across the Salish Sea, Lushootseed faced a near-silent future. After decades of decline, a new generation is reclaiming this complex language, moving it from the archives of ceremony back into the rhythms of daily life.

Historically spanning from Bellingham to Olympia, Lushootseed—also known as Puget Salish—is a Central Coast Salish language. At its peak, the language community was estimated at 12,000 speakers. However, the 20th century brought a period of extreme fragility. By the late 1980s, some estimates suggested as few as 60 fluent speakers remained. The passing of Vi Hilbert in 2008 marked a profound loss, as she was the last person with a full native command of the language.

The language is characterized by a complex dialect continuum, primarily divided into Northern (dxʷləšucid) and Southern (txʷəlšucid) varieties. These dialects differ in everything from stress patterns to vocabulary; for instance, the word for 'raccoon' shifts from x̌aʔx̌əlus in the north to bəlups in the south. Structurally, Lushootseed is an agglutinating language with a flexible word order, often following a verb-subject-object pattern, and a system of prefixes that indicate tense and motion.

Today, the language is in a state of 'reawakening.' While it remains classified as Critically Endangered by UNESCO, there has been a significant surge in second-language learners. Data from the Puyallup Tribe indicates that by 2022, there were approximately 472 second-language speakers—people who use the language for at least one hour daily. This revitalization is supported by tribal language departments, school programs in the Tulalip and Marysville districts, and even digital innovations like Unicode-compliant typefaces designed by Juliet Shen.
