Why our ancestors kept their hair long to survive the savanna
In short: While humans lost most of their body fur 2.5 to 3 million years ago to stay cool while hunting, our heads remained an exception. Long hair wasn't just a fashion choice; it was a vital biological shield against the sun and a window into our health.
As early hominids transitioned from forests to the open savanna, natural selection favored the loss of body fur. This allowed humans to run fast and hunt near the equator without overheating. However, head hair was preserved as a critical survival mechanism. It provides thermal insulation for the scalp, protects against ultraviolet radiation, and aids in cooling through the evaporation of sweat.
Beyond survival, hair length serves as a biological ledger. Because hair grows slowly, the condition of a person's hair can reveal their nutritional and health status from the previous two to three years. For example, starvation or mineral deficiencies can cause hair loss or even change its color, such as dark hair turning reddish. In evolutionary terms, long, lustrous hair acts as a visual cue for youth and reproductive fitness.
The biological limits of this growth are governed by the anagen, or growth, phase. This period typically lasts between two and seven years. While most hair strands are in this active phase at any given time, the maximum length an individual can reach depends on the duration of their specific anagen cycle. In extreme cases, such as Xie Qiuping in 2004, documented hair has reached staggering lengths of 5.627 meters.
Culturally, hair length has been used to signal everything from social class to political rebellion. In ancient Greece, long hair symbolized wealth and power, whereas in the English Civil War, the length of a man's hair could identify him as a Cavalier or a Roundhead. Today, while trends like the 'man bun' have brought longer styles into the mainstream, hair remains a potent symbol of identity and even medical altruism through donations.
