A story of love and loss that transcends sight
In short: Nanigashi Shima's acclaimed light novel series, Love Unseen Beneath the Clear Night Sky, explores a profound connection between two students. As one navigates the world through blindness, the other finds a new sense of purpose, creating an emotional journey that has captivated readers and expanded into manga and anime.
The series, known in Japanese as Kakekoi, follows Kakeru Sorano, a university student from Shimonoseki. Initially an introvert, Kakeru’s life changes after meeting Koharu Fuyutsuki during a drinking party. Koharu, who is blind due to cancer, continues her university studies despite her condition. Their bond deepens as Kakeru becomes determined to help her fulfill her wishes, including a dream to launch fireworks. The protagonist's transformation begins after he meets Koharu at a social gathering. This connection inspires him to overcome his naturally reserved nature.
The narrative carries significant emotional weight, tracing the characters through marriage and parenthood. Kakeru and Koharu have a daughter named Sakura. However, the story is marked by tragedy; Koharu eventually dies from breast cancer at the age of 48. Kakeru, who is later diagnosed with terminal cancer, finds the strength to battle his illness after hearing a recording of Koharu, though he passes away a few years later. The couple's family life includes their child, Sakura. Ultimately, Kakeru's own health struggles mirror the hardships faced by his wife.
Since its debut under SB Creative's GA Bunko imprint in August 2023, the franchise has seen significant expansion. Following its success, it received a manga adaptation by Hat on Square Enix's Manga Up! in August 2024. The series has also been adapted into a live-action television drama and an anime series produced by Makaria, earning critical praise for its artstyle, characters, and emotional resonance. The franchise's popularity was cemented by its high rankings in the 2024 Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! Awards. Additionally, the English-speaking market can access the work through Yen Press.
