The resilient shrub that reshaped the New Zealand landscape
In short: Native to New Zealand and Australia, mānuka is a master of survival. Capable of colonizing cleared land and thriving in poor soils, this hardy species has evolved unique traits to withstand fire and isolation, eventually becoming a cornerstone of both Māori tradition and the global honey market.
Mānuka (Leptospermum scoparium) is a prolific shrub-type tree that plays a vital role in ecological succession. It is often among the first species to regenerate on cleared land, creating environments that allow other native species to establish. Because of this ability, it is frequently utilized in New Zealand conservation projects.
The plant's evolutionary journey is a subject of ongoing study. Evidence suggests mānuka originated in Australia before the Miocene aridity and arrived in New Zealand via long-distance dispersal, likely through wind or cyclones, within the last 20 million years. Once established, the species began a process of evolutionary differentiation due to its isolation from other members of the Leptospermum genus.
This isolation has led to distinct chemical and physical variations. While Australian and Tasmanian populations retain fire-adaptive traits like lignotubers and strong serotiny, populations in fire-free zones of New Zealand's South Island have shown a loss of these lignotubers. Furthermore, while some researchers suggest the plant could be divided into three subspecies based on terpene levels, recent research indicates that plant-to-plant variation may actually exceed the chemical differences found between geographically isolated sites.
Beyond its ecology, mānuka holds deep cultural significance. In traditional Māori culture, the plant was used for construction—including eel weirs and pā walls—as well as for tools like paddles and digging sticks. It also holds a place in rongoā medicine, where infusions or gums were used to treat various ailments, from fever to burns.
