In short: Perched near the Pacific, Malibu High School is known for its academic rankings and musical accolades. Yet, beneath its coastal charm lies a history marked by environmental controversy, shifting athletic formats, and a campus site that once sparked intense debate regarding its potential past as a World War II training center.

Established in 1992 on the former site of a junior high school, Malibu High School was created to end the two-hour roundtrip commute students previously endured to reach Santa Monica. The campus, which spans 35 acres, has since become a focal point for both academic achievement and public scrutiny. By 2003, the school earned recognition as a California Distinguished School and began appearing in national rankings, such as Newsweek’s Top 1200 and U.S. News & World Report’s top 100 list in 2007.

The school’s reputation faced significant challenges starting in 2013, when teachers raised concerns over potential environmental contaminants. Following reports of thyroid cancer among staff, testing revealed polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) in building caulk at levels exceeding regulatory limits. This triggered a protracted conflict involving the school district, the EPA, and the advocacy group Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER). While the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers denied the site was ever used for military training, the controversy highlighted deep tensions between local stakeholders and institutional management regarding safety and transparency.

Beyond these challenges, the school maintains a distinct cultural identity. Its athletic teams, the Sharks, have evolved alongside the institution, notably shifting their football program to an eight-man format in 2019. The school also fosters a robust arts scene, with choirs and orchestras performing at Carnegie Hall. With a student body that remains relatively small—387 students in 2025—the school continues to balance its rigorous college-preparatory curriculum with specialized resources for students, including extensive support for special education.
