How an Icelandic gymnast turned a children's television show into a global health movement
In short: Magnús Scheving, a champion gymnast and carpenter, noticed a void in children's media: there were no positive health role models. He created LazyTown to fill that gap, eventually becoming the iconic Sportacus. His journey from a small-town messenger to an international entrepreneur reveals a unique blend of athleticism and business.
Magnús Scheving’s career began in the world of competitive athletics. A two-time European champion and World championship medalist in aerobic gymnastics, he was named Iceland's Sportsperson of the Year in 1994. His transition to entertainment was driven by a specific observation: children lacked healthy role models. He critiqued existing characters like Popeye, who promoted spinach but also modeled unhealthy habits like smoking and violence. In 1995, he published the book Áfram Latibær, which introduced a sports-focused elf who encouraged exercise and nutrition, laying the foundation for the LazyTown franchise.
The franchise exploded in popularity after being adapted into a stage play that toured Iceland from 1996 to 1997. By 2004, the television series LazyTown began airing on Nick Jr., with Scheving starring as the athletic hero Sportacus. The show’s impact was significant; one report claimed it helped reduce childhood obesity in Iceland by 16 percent. Beyond the screen, Scheving’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to co-found LazyTown Entertainment, which produced games, books, and sporting goods. He served as CEO until 2014, the same year he retired from his role as Sportacus.
Scheving’s life remains multifaceted. He has worked as a public speaker, a film actor, and a restaurant owner in Reykjavík. His business ventures have not been without controversy; he and his wife, Hrefna Björk Sverrisdóttir, are currently subjects of an investigation by the Icelandic Competition Authority regarding labor practices at their restaurant, ROK. Despite these legal challenges, his influence on children's media persists. In 2024, he announced a deal to repurchase the rights to the LazyTown brand from Warner Bros. Discovery, signaling a potential new chapter for the franchise that began in his hometown of Borgarnes.
