A long-delayed Goa trip spirals into a chaotic crime comedy in Madgaon Express
In short: Three childhood friends finally reach Goa after years of failed plans, only to find their vacation derailed by a misplaced bag of cash, a stash of cocaine, and rival gangsters. This 2024 directorial debut by Kunal Khemu blends slapstick humor with a high-stakes criminal underworld in a wild, relentless comedy.
The story follows Dhanush Sawant, Pratik Garodia, and Ayush Gupta, who first dreamed of visiting Goa in 1998. After multiple failed attempts—including a graduation trip in 2003 cut short by an accident—the trio finally reunites in 2015. By this time, Pinku and Ayush have found success abroad in Cape Town and New York, while Dodo struggles in Mumbai. To hide his insecurity, Dodo fakes a glamorous life online, eventually coercing his friends into a budget train trip to Goa to mask his financial reality.
The comedy of errors begins when a bag swap at the train station leaves the friends in possession of a stranger’s illicit goods. Their beach getaway quickly turns into a nightmare involving a ruthless gangster named Mendoza Bhai, a vengeful lady gangster named Kanchan Kombdi, and a stash of cocaine hidden under their hotel bed. As they navigate this criminal web, the friends are forced into absurd situations, including disguising themselves as women to infiltrate a gang hideout. The film relies on relentless pacing, moving between slapstick physical comedy and sharp dialogue as the trio attempts to clear their names.
Released on 22 March 2024, the film earned ₹57 crore worldwide and received four nominations at the 70th Filmfare Awards. Critics were divided on its frantic energy. While some reviewers praised its unadulterated entertainment and inherent silliness, others felt the humor often fell flat. Despite the mixed reception, the film’s success led to a spin-off titled Vibe, released in September 2026. Ultimately, the narrative serves as a chaotic exploration of friendship, where the characters must reconcile their personal deceptions—including Dodo’s fake online persona—before they can escape the dangerous consequences of their accidental involvement in the Goa drug trade.
The production, which began in August 2022 and wrapped in February 2023, features an ensemble cast including Divyenndu, Pratik Gandhi, and Avinash Tiwary. By the end of their ordeal, the friends manage to outsmart the gangsters with the help of an undercover cop, finally finding a sense of resolution. Dodo’s eventual financial success and the group’s enduring bond highlight the film’s core theme: that despite years of distance and hidden truths, the shared history of the three friends remains their strongest connection.
