The high school president who secretly serves coffee in a maid café
In short: At Seika High, Misaki Ayuzawa is a formidable leader, earning a reputation as a strict, boy-hating dictator. But behind her academic and athletic excellence lies a hidden struggle: a part-time job in a maid café to pay off her family's massive debts.
Hiro Fujiwara’s manga series, *Maid Sama!*, first appeared as a one-shot in December 2005 before its long-running serialization in the magazine *LaLa* from April 2006 to September 2013. The story follows Misaki Ayuzawa, the first female student council president of Seika High—a school that recently transitioned from all-boys to co-ed. While she is a pillar of strength for female students and teachers, her private life is defined by the burden of a large debt left by her father, forcing her to work at a maid café to support her mother and sister.
The narrative tension escalates when Takumi Usui, a brilliant and popular student, discovers her secret. Rather than exposing her, Usui becomes a regular customer, initiating a complex relationship shaped by his own difficult past as the illegitimate child of a wealthy English noble family. Their bond is tested by social standing and even physical separation, as Usui is eventually forced to move to England, though the series concludes with their marriage ten years later.
Critics have offered diverse perspectives on the series' impact. While some reviewers, such as Connie C. of Pop Culture Shock, viewed it as a lighthearted 'guilty pleasure,' others found the themes more contentious. Johanna Draper Carlson of Comics Worth Reading critiqued the narrative as a male fantasy regarding female subservience, whereas Deb Aoki of About.com suggested the maid café setting could serve as a critique of gender roles. Despite these debates, the 2010 anime adaptation remains highly regarded, with Lauren Orsini of *Forbes* naming it one of the best anime of 2010.
