Why five massive conglomerates control the vast majority of American box office revenue
In short: The global film industry is dominated by a select group of media giants known as the Big Five. By industrializing filmmaking and mastering efficient distribution, these companies command roughly 80 to 85 percent of the American box office, making it nearly impossible for others to reach broad international theatrical audiences.
Today's Big Five—Universal, Paramount, Warner Bros., Disney, and Sony—are the modern successors to the studios that defined Hollywood's Golden Age. While the industry landscape has shifted dramatically over the last century, these conglomerates maintain their grip through extensive internal economies of scale. They function less as traditional production houses and more as financial backers, marketers, and distributors for films often created by independent entities.
The evolution of these majors has been marked by constant consolidation. Disney, for instance, only attained major status in 1984, while Sony entered the fold after acquiring Columbia Pictures in 1989. The most recent major shift occurred in 2019 when Disney acquired Fox, reducing the field to its current five. Meanwhile, the geographic center of this power remains firmly rooted in Southern California, though the studios themselves are now owned by diverse parent corporations, ranging from Comcast to the Tokyo-based Sony Group Corporation.
The distinction between a major and a mini-major or independent studio often comes down to market share and distribution capacity. While companies like A24 or Amazon MGM Studios compete for attention, the Big Five retain their status by controlling the essential infrastructure required to push films into every significant international market. Even as the physical act of shooting movies moves away from Los Angeles, the strategic decisions regarding development, financing, and merchandising remain concentrated within these few powerful organizations.
