How a small island carrier evolved from local seaplanes to international widebody jets
In short: The national airline of the Maldives began as a modest domestic operator with just three small planes. Today, it is undergoing a massive transformation, moving beyond inter-island hops to launch long-haul international routes using widebody aircraft, signaling a new era for the flag carrier of this remote island nation.
Originally established as Island Aviation Services, the carrier began its journey by connecting domestic airports within the Maldives. In its early years, the fleet was limited to a single Bombardier Dash 8 Q200 and a pair of Dornier 228s. By 2008, the company underwent a significant rebranding to become Maldivian, officially assuming its role as the nation's flag carrier. This period marked a shift in strategy, as the airline began expanding its reach beyond the archipelago, starting with scheduled international service to Thiruvananthapuram, India, in January 2008.
The airline's fleet strategy has seen constant evolution over the last two decades. After phasing out its early Dornier aircraft in 2006, the company steadily acquired various Dash 8 models and eventually introduced the DHC-6 Twin Otter in 2014 to bolster its domestic capabilities. A major technological pivot occurred in 2023 when the airline began replacing its aging Dash 8 fleet with modern ATR 72-600 and ATR 42-600 aircraft. This transition to more efficient, next-generation turboprops set the stage for the airline's most ambitious expansion yet.
In January 2025, Maldivian reached a major milestone by introducing its first widebody aircraft, an Airbus A330-200, which performed its inaugural flight to Chengdu, China. This acquisition is part of a broader plan to incorporate additional widebody jets, including a second A330 and a Boeing 787-8. With these larger planes, the airline is actively seeking to establish new connections across Europe, Africa, and Asia. Beyond the flight deck, the company maintains a distinct visual identity, having evolved from an original livery featuring dolphins and tuna to a cleaner, modern design that highlights the blue waves of the Indian Ocean.
