The silent architect behind the scenes of Iran's leadership
In short: She was known as a patient spouse, yet her private life held secrets of revolutionary espionage. From hiding documents to facilitating high-stakes political meetings, Mansoureh Khojastte Bagherzadeh operated in the shadows of the Islamic Republic's most powerful office.
Born around 1947 in Mashhad to a prominent businessman, Mohammad Esmaeil Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh lived a life defined by a carefully maintained private profile. While her husband, Ali Khamenei, rose from a revolutionary figure to the second Supreme Leader of Iran, she avoided formal political positions. However, her contributions to the revolution were far from passive. During his imprisonment prior to 1979, Khamenei credited her with providing essential support, even claiming she facilitated a 1972 meeting between him and Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani by posing as Rafsanjani's sister to deceive prison guards.
Her clandestine activities extended to logistics and communication. In an interview with the English-language magazine Mahjubeh in the early 1990s, she revealed her involvement in distributing leaflets, hiding documents, and managing the duplication of messages from Imam Khomeini in Paris. Despite this, she publicly described her primary role as maintaining a peaceful domestic atmosphere. Her family connections were deeply embedded in the Iranian establishment; her brother, Hassan Khojaste Bagherzadeh, served as a former deputy director of the Islamic Republic of Em Iran Broadcasting.
Her life was also marked by controversy and tragedy. In 1999, reports surfaced via the website Nusazi alleging a 'secret trip' to London involving the family of Saeed Emami, with claims that she had even performed domestic tasks for him. The end of her life was as tumultuous as her political involvement. Following a period of hospitalization in June 2010 for surgery, she was caught in the violence of 2026. While IRIB TV2 reported she died on 2 March 2026 from injuries sustained in a US and Israeli airstrike that also killed her husband, the Fars News Agency later contested this, claiming she was still alive as of 12 March 2026.
