In short: Margaret, the Maid of Norway, was the last legitimate descendant of Scotland's royal line. Though recognized as the heir presumptive and later as queen-designate, she never set foot in her kingdom. Her sudden death at age seven triggered a massive succession crisis that reshaped the history of the British Isles.

Born in 1283 to King Eric II of Norway and Margaret of Scotland, the young princess became the sole heir to the Scottish throne following the death of her grandfather, Alexander III, in 1286. Because she was a child, her reign was defined by the complex diplomatic maneuvering of three kingdoms: Norway, Scotland, and England. While Scottish magnates appointed guardians to govern in her name, her status remained precarious, as the kingdom awaited the outcome of a pregnancy involving the late King’s widow, Yolanda of Dreux.

The political stakes were immense. King Edward I of England sought to secure a personal union between the two realms by arranging a marriage between Margaret and his son, Edward of Caernarfon. Negotiations, including the Treaty of Birgham in 1290, aimed to preserve Scottish independence even within this union. Throughout these talks, the terminology used to describe Margaret was highly contested; while English diplomats insisted on calling her queen to expedite the union, many Scots preferred the more cautious title of 'lady'.

Margaret’s journey to Scotland in 1290 ended in tragedy when she fell ill and died on the Orkney Islands. Her death left the throne vacant, sparking the Great Cause, a succession dispute involving thirteen competitors, most notably Robert Bruce and John Balliol. Even today, historians debate her official status. Because she was never inaugurated at Scone, some scholars argue she was never truly queen, while others point to contemporary documents and papal recognition as evidence that her reign began the moment Alexander III died.
