Maria Sakkari is the highest-ranked Greek female tennis player in history
In short: Born into a family of professional tennis players, Maria Sakkari has carved out a formidable career on the WTA Tour. Known for her aggressive, all-court style and powerful serve, she became the first Greek woman to reach a major semifinal, fundamentally changing the landscape of tennis in her home country.
Born in Athens on 25 July 1995, Sakkari was introduced to the sport by her mother, Angelikí Kanellopoúlou, a former top-50 player, and her grandfather, Dimitris Kanellopoulos. Her professional journey began in earnest when she moved to Barcelona at age 18 to train. After years of navigating qualifying rounds, she broke into the top 100 in 2016 and steadily climbed the rankings, eventually reaching a career-high world No. 3 on 21 March 2022.
Sakkari’s breakthrough on the global stage arrived in 2021, a landmark year where she reached the semifinals at both the French Open and the US Open. These performances made her the first Greek woman to achieve such milestones at a major. Her consistency against elite competition has been a hallmark of her career; by September 2021, she had secured multiple victories over top-10 opponents, including Iga Świątek and Bianca Andreescu, propelling her into the top 10 of the WTA rankings for the first time.
Beyond her Grand Slam success, Sakkari has demonstrated versatility across surfaces, favoring hard and clay courts. Her trophy cabinet includes a WTA 1000 title from the 2023 Guadalajara Open, a significant achievement in a career defined by resilience. Her impact extends beyond the court, as she has been named the Greek Female Athlete of the Year twice, in 2020 and 2021, and has featured in the Netflix docuseries Break Point, bringing further visibility to her rise in the sport.
