In short: From the high-stakes drama of Line of Duty to the pirate seas of Assassin's Creed, Mark Bonnar has mastered the art of transformation. Discover how a childhood spent moving through Scotland's new towns shaped a career spanning stage, screen, and even motion capture.

Born in Edinburgh on 19 November 1968, Mark Bonnar's early life was defined by movement. As the son of environmental artist Stan, whose work as a town artist for the Scottish New Towns required frequent relocation, Bonnar grew up in Stonehouse, South Lanarkshire. This upbringing, which included attending Townhead Primary School, eventually led him back to Edinburgh, where he attended Leith Academy alongside future co-stars like Jamie Sives.

Bonnar's professional repertoire is remarkably diverse, spanning prestigious theatre stages and mainstream television. His stage credits include significant roles at the National Theatre, such as Cyrano de Bergerac in 2004 and Philistines in 2007, as well as performances at the Old Vic and the Donmar Warehouse. On television, he has become a familiar face in British crime and drama, playing notable characters such as Duncan Hunter in Shetland, Detective Finney in Psychoville, and DCC Mike Dryden in Line of Duty.

Beyond live-action performance, Bonnar has utilized motion capture and voice work to breathe life into digital legends. He provided both voice and motion capture for the notorious pirate Edward 'Blackbeard' Thatch in the 2013 game Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, and for Townsend in the 2016 title Battlefield 1. His range even extends to children's programming, voicing characters in the CBeebies series Tree Fu Tom.

In more recent years, his work has expanded into high-profile streaming and reality television. He is set to star as Lord Advocate Stephen Burns in the Netflix drama Dept. Q in 2025 and will appear in the second series of the BBC detective series Ludwig as Gareth Fisher. In May 2025, he also entered the realm of reality competition as a 'Faithful' on the first series of The Celebrity Traitors, where he was eventually banished in the sixth episode.
