Mark Coles Smith is redefining the scope of an Australian screen icon
In short: From acting in major television dramas to composing electro-pop under the name Kalaji, Mark Coles Smith defies simple categorization. The Nyikina performer has become a trailblazer for Indigenous representation, recently making history as the first Indigenous Australian actor to receive a Gold Logie nomination while balancing a diverse creative career.
Born in 1987 in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Mark Coles Smith grew up on a cattle station near the Fitzroy River. His heritage is remarkably diverse, encompassing Nyikina roots alongside German, Polish, English, Scottish, and Indonesian ancestry. This multifaceted background informs his work, which spans acting, sound design, field recording, and music composition. His career began early; he made his television debut at age 14 in the children's series Ocean Star after his aunt took him to an open audition.
Coles Smith achieved significant critical success for his role as Tilly in the 2015 film Last Cab to Darwin, earning an FCCA Award. His profile rose further when he was cast as a younger version of detective Jay Swan in the prequel series Mystery Road: Origin in 2021. Beyond his screen work, he is a dedicated storyteller, narrating documentaries like Keeping Hope, which addresses suicide in the Kimberley, and producing multimedia performances under the stage name Kalaji, a Nyikina word for whirlwind.
His creative output is deeply rooted in his connection to the Martuwarra, or Fitzroy River catchment area. His 2021 electro-pop album, also titled Kalaji, blends synths with field recordings of natural sounds to meditate on intergenerational memory and Nyikina culture. Whether he is performing in stage plays like The Drover's Wife, which earned him a Helpmann Award in 2017, or narrating audiobooks, Coles Smith consistently bridges the gap between traditional storytelling and modern media. By 2023, he had returned to his hometown of Broome, continuing to balance his professional commitments with a profound engagement with his cultural heritage and the landscapes that shaped him.
