In short: Before she became a household name as Counselor Deanna Troi, Marina Sirtis was actually packing her bags to return to Britain. Her six-month visa had expired, but a sudden casting decision by Gene Roddenberry was about to change the trajectory of her career and the Star Trek franchise forever.

Marina Sirtis is a British-American actress, born in Hackney, London, to Greek parents. After graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1976, she began her career in repertory theatre, appearing in works like Joe Orton's 'What the Butler Saw'. In 1986, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue larger opportunities, eventually becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen.

Her path to the Enterprise was serendipitous. Inspired by the character Vasquez in the film 'Aliens', Gene Roddenberry sought an actress with an 'exotic' appearance for a new role. Sirtis and Denise Crosby had originally auditioned for each other's parts; however, Roddenberry ultimately decided to switch their roles, making Sirtis the counselor Deanna Troi and moving the other actress into the role of Tasha Yar.

The character of Troi, a half-human, half-Betazoid capable of sensing emotions, underwent significant development. Initially, writers struggled with the character, leaving her out of four episodes during the first season. Sirtis feared for her job security until Roddenberry personally assured her that the second season would focus on her character. Over seven seasons, Troi evolved from a passive therapist into a more authoritative Starfleet officer, a shift Sirtis welcomed as it allowed her to play a more capable, commanding role.

Beyond Star Trek, Sirtis has maintained a prolific career across film, television, and voice acting. She has appeared in diverse projects ranging from the horror film 'Waxwork II: Lost in Time' to providing the voice for Matriarch Benezia in the video game 'Mass Effect'. In 2019, she made her West End stage debut in 'Dark Sublime'.
