Although Mark initially survived the crash, he succumbed to his injuries in the early episodes of Season 9. Following the deaths of Mark and Lexie, the hospital formerly known as Seattle Grace Mercy West was renamed Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital to honor them. His departure from the series was a subject of industry debate; while Shonda Rhimes stated the decision to conclude his storyline was mutual with Dane, reports suggested network budget cuts may have influenced the casting changes. His exit was marked by a poignant moment where he advised his protégé, Jackson Avery, to express his feelings to those he loves. This occurred as he faced death on life support.
