Mastodon returns to its heavy roots following a period of profound personal loss
In short: After the death of founding guitarist Brent Hinds, heavy metal titans Mastodon have emerged as a five-piece band. Their ninth studio album, Marrow Deep, trades previous psychedelic experiments for a raw, ritualistic sound. It is a somber, collaborative reflection on grief, featuring an array of legendary guest musicians.
Released on August 28, 2026, Marrow Deep marks a significant transition for Mastodon. The band faced a series of tragedies during the recording process, specifically the deaths of drummer Brann Dailor's mother and founding lead guitarist Brent Hinds. Hinds departed the group in 2025, the same year he passed away. In his wake, the band recruited guitarist Nick Johnston and officially added keyboardist João Nogueira to the lineup, establishing the group as a five-piece ensemble for the first time.
The album, produced by Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou, signals a deliberate shift in musical direction. Moving away from the progressive rock and punk influences that characterized their recent work, the band returned to a more straightforward, primitive, and ritualistic heavy metal aesthetic. While the core songwriting remains the domain of Dailor, Bill Kelliher, and Troy Sanders, the sound is bolstered by Nogueira’s prominent synthesizers. This return to their heavier origins has been met with critical success, earning a weighted average score of 81 out of 100 on Metacritic.
Marrow Deep is notable for its extensive list of guest contributors, many of whom have long-standing ties to the band. Josh Homme, who previously appeared on 2006's Blood Mountain, provides vocals on the single Snakes for Dinner. Other notable appearances include Neil Fallon of Clutch, Joe Duplantier of Gojira, and Black Sabbath’s Geezer Butler, who contributes a bass intro to the track The Vanishing. The album also incorporates cinematic elements, such as dialogue sampled from the film River's Edge on the track Poisonous Weapons. By leaning into these collaborations and their own history, Mastodon has crafted a record that serves as both a tribute to their lost members and a reinforcement of their foundational sludge and stoner metal identity.
