The forgotten life of the first mestizo son of a Spanish conquistador
In short: Born in an Aztec palace to Hernán Cortés and La Malinche, Martín Cortés lived a life defined by his dual heritage. Legitimized by the Pope and raised in the Spanish court, he navigated a world of military campaigns and political intrigue, ultimately dying in battle while seeking his place in history.
Martín Cortés, known as El Mestizo, was born around 1522 in a former Aztec palace. As the first-born son of the conquistador Hernán Cortés and the indigenous interpreter La Malinche, his status was complex. Though born into the turmoil of New Spain, he was later legitimized by a papal bull from Clement VII in 1529. His father ensured he received a high-status education in the Spanish court, where he served as a page to Empress Isabella and the future King Philip II.
His adulthood was marked by a blend of privilege and peril. He participated in major military conflicts, including the Schmalkaldic War and the Italian War, and became a Knight of the Order of Santiago. Despite his noble connections, he faced significant legal and political challenges. In 1566, he was caught in the fallout of the so-called marquis plot, a supposed rebellion in New Spain. He was arrested, tortured, and eventually exiled to Spain, though he was later exonerated by King Philip II.
The later years of his life were spent in service to John of Austria. He never returned to his birthplace, Mexico, and died in 1569 while suppressing the Second Alpujarras Rebellion. His life remains a striking example of the tensions inherent in the early colonial era, caught between the prestige of his father’s legacy and the precarious reality of his own identity as one of the first mestizos of New Spain.
