In short: In 2014, Marvel Games ended a long partnership with Activision, facing skepticism that they could find a new home for Spider-Man. Instead of fading away, they built a cinematic universe that redefined what a licensed superhero game could achieve.

The transition was born from frustration. Marvel Games Vice President Jay Ong noted that previous deals with Activision required rapid development cycles to align with film releases, often resulting in products that were not 'truly terrific.' When Marvel terminated the partnership in 2014, Activision executives mockingly questioned if they could find a 'better home' for the IP, even taunting Ong to 'good luck finding your unicorn.'

The search for a partner led to Sony Interactive Entertainment. While Microsoft and Nintendo were considered, Nintendo was initially ruled out due to technical constraints, and Microsoft preferred focusing on its own internal IP. Sony executives Adam Boyes and John Drake eventually agreed to a deal intended to rival the success of the Batman: Arkham series.

Insomniac Games, the chosen developer, approached the project with a focus on relatability. While the studio had previously focused on original franchises, the team was drawn to the 'everyman' struggle of Peter Parker. By leveraging existing traversal technology from their title Sunset Overdrive, they created a critically acclaimed series featuring both Peter Parker and Miles Morales.

The franchise has since expanded into a shared universe. Beyond the primary Spider-Man titles, Insomniac is developing Marvel's Wolverine and has plans for an X-Men game. However, the journey has not been without turbulence; a 2023 ransomware attack by the group Rhysida breached 1.67 terabytes of studio data, exposing unreleased projects and internal corporate details.
