From winless beginnings to national champions: the storied evolution of Maryland Terrapins football
In short: The Maryland Terrapins football program has navigated a century of radical shifts, from its 1892 winless debut to a 1953 national championship. Once dubbed Quarterback U, the team has survived coaching turnover, conference realignments, and legendary comebacks, defining a unique identity in the competitive landscape of American college football.
The program began in 1892 as the Maryland Agricultural College team, which failed to score a single point in its inaugural season. By 1893, however, the team achieved a perfect 6–0 record. The program’s modern identity was forged under coach Jim Tatum, who arrived in 1947. Tatum led the Terrapins to three perfect seasons and a national championship in 1953, the same year Maryland helped form the Atlantic Coast Conference. This era established a standard of excellence that the program struggled to replicate for decades following Tatum’s 1955 departure.
The 1980s brought a tactical revolution under head coach Bobby Ross. Moving away from the traditional I-veer option, Ross installed a high-powered, NFL-style passing offense that earned the school the nickname Quarterback U. This period featured the 1984 season, which included the greatest comeback in college football history at the time: trailing Miami 31–0 at halftime, Maryland rallied to win 42–40. Despite such highs, the program faced significant instability, including the 1986 resignation of Ross, who cited frustration over facility development and the fallout from the death of basketball star Len Bias.
The turn of the millennium saw Ralph Friedgen, a former Maryland player and assistant, return as head coach in 2001. Friedgen immediately revitalized the program, leading the team to its first outright ACC title since 1991 and a BCS appearance in the Orange Bowl. Despite his success, including an ACC Coach of the Year award in 2010, the athletic department bought out his contract for $2 million, citing a lack of fan support. This decision marked the beginning of another transition period, leading to the hiring of Randy Edsall and the eventual appointment of current head coach Mike Locksley, who continues to shape the program’s trajectory within the Big Ten Conference.
