In short: When Florida Atlantic University launched its football program in 2001, legendary coach Howard Schnellenberger ignored the typical growing pains of a new team. He immediately set his sights on the national championship, establishing a culture of lofty expectations that defined the Owls' rapid, albeit turbulent, rise through the collegiate ranks.

The Florida Atlantic Owls began their journey in 2001 as an NCAA Division I-AA independent, led by Howard Schnellenberger, a coach renowned for rebuilding programs at Miami and Louisville. Schnellenberger’s approach was unconventional; he insisted on scheduling the toughest opponents possible to accelerate the program's development. This ambition paid off quickly. By 2007, in just their seventh year of existence, the Owls became the second-youngest program in history to earn a bowl invitation, defeating Minnesota to secure a victory against a Big Ten opponent.

The program’s history is marked by distinct eras of leadership and shifting conference affiliations. After moving to the Sun Belt Conference and later Conference USA, the team experienced significant highs and lows. The tenure of Lane Kiffin, from 2016 to 2019, stands out for its success, yielding a 26–13 record and two Conference USA titles. During this period, tight end Harrison Bryant made history as the university's first consensus and unanimous All-American, while also securing the prestigious John Mackey Award.

Despite these successes, the program has faced frequent instability, cycling through multiple head coaches including Carl Pelini, Charlie Partridge, Willie Taggart, and Tom Herman. The Owls have maintained a competitive edge in regional rivalries, particularly the Shula Bowl against Florida International University. As of the 2023 season, Florida Atlantic holds a 16–5 lead in the series. With five bowl game appearances and a 4–1 record, the program continues to navigate the complexities of modern collegiate athletics under its newest leadership, maintaining the bold spirit established at its inception.
