How a factory accident and a joint created the blueprint for heavy metal
In short: Black Sabbath's third album, Master of Reality, is a cornerstone of stoner rock and sludge metal. Born from a guitarist's injury and a band finding its studio confidence, the record transformed from a critical failure into a landmark of heavy music, influencing generations of artists from Nirvana to Soundgarden.
Released on 6 August 1971, Master of Reality marked a pivotal shift for Black Sabbath. While their previous albums were recorded under tight deadlines, the band spent February to April 1971 at Island Studios in London with more creative freedom. This allowed for experimentation, including Tony Iommi’s use of classical guitar, flute, and piano. However, this newfound comfort also brought challenges; the band struggled with complex arrangements, particularly on the track Into the Void, which drummer Bill Ward found difficult to master.
The album's signature sound was born of necessity. Years before, Iommi suffered a factory accident that severed his fingertips, making standard guitar tension painful. To compensate, he downtuned his instrument by 1.5 steps, a technique bassist Geezer Butler adopted to match. This produced a heavier, darker tone that defined the record. The band’s lifestyle also left its mark: a recording of Iommi coughing after smoking a joint was used by producer Rodger Bain as the intro to Sweet Leaf, an ode to marijuana.
Upon release, critics were harsh, with The Village Voice calling it a dim-witted exploitation. Yet, the album’s influence proved enduring. It eventually sold over two million copies in the US, earning double platinum status. By the 1990s, its legacy was cemented as a foundational text for grunge and alternative rock. Today, it is widely regarded as a masterpiece, with drummer Bill Ward naming it his favorite Black Sabbath album, and publications like Rolling Stone consistently ranking it among the greatest records of all time.
