In short: Founded in 1970 as Raw Soul, the group spent years chasing a breakthrough. After relocating to San Francisco, a chance encounter with Marvin Gaye changed everything. Gaye not only took them on tour but also convinced them to adopt a new name, setting the stage for decades of success.

The band began in Philadelphia in 1970 under the name Raw Soul. Despite recording early singles on the Gregar label, they struggled to find mainstream traction. A pivotal shift occurred in 1971 when the group moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and connected with Marvin Gaye. Gaye recognized their potential, inviting them to serve as his opening act on tour. By 1976, Gaye encouraged the band to rebrand, leading founding member Roame to propose the name Maze.

Following their signing with Capitol Records in 1976, the band released their self-titled debut in 1977. This era launched a prolific run, with the group securing nine gold-certified albums between 1977 and 1993. Their sound resonated deeply with audiences, particularly in the United States and the United Kingdom, where they built a loyal following. Their 1985 album, Can't Stop the Love, delivered their first number one R&B hit, "Back In Stride," while "Too Many Games" became their highest-charting single in the UK.

The band's legacy is defined by both their music and their unique connection with fans. It became a tradition for concertgoers to wear all-white attire, mirroring the group's own stage aesthetic. Even as personnel shifted—including the 2023 departure of several long-time members and the retirement of Frankie Beverly—the group's influence persisted. Following Beverly's death in 2024 at age 77, the ensemble transitioned to a new iteration, "Maze Honoring Frankie Beverly," with Tony Lindsay taking over as lead vocalist to preserve their enduring musical tradition.

The band's impact was further cemented in 2009 with the release of a tribute project featuring contemporary artists performing their classic repertoire, with the original members serving as the backing band. From their humble beginnings as Raw Soul to their status as soul icons, the group maintained a consistent presence in the industry, marked by hits like "Joy and Pain" and "Before I Let Go."
