From a small island to the pinnacle of English professional football
In short: Maya Le Tissier has redefined the path to the top of the Women's Super League. Growing up on Guernsey with no girls' teams, she honed her skills against boys before becoming a record-breaking captain for Manchester United and a trailblazing representative for her home island on the international stage.
Born in April 2002, Maya Le Tissier began her footballing journey at four years old with St. Martins A.C. on the island of Guernsey. Because the island lacked dedicated girls' squads, she played alongside boys, a formative experience she credits for her development. By age 13, she began traveling to Hampshire twice monthly to compete for a county team, balancing this rigorous schedule with her schooling until the logistical demands became unsustainable. Her early dedication culminated in a historic milestone in March 2018, when she became the first female to play for the Guernsey under-16 boys' team during the Muratti Vase.
Le Tissier's professional trajectory accelerated after joining Brighton & Hove Albion's academy in July 2018. She quickly transitioned to the senior squad, debuting that December. Her consistent performance as a centre-back earned her consecutive Young Player of the Season honors at Brighton. In July 2022, she moved to Manchester United, where her impact was immediate; she scored twice on her debut. By August 2024, she was appointed club captain. Her reliability is statistically significant: in October 2025, she set a record for the most consecutive Women's Super League starts for a single club, reaching 71 appearances in a row.
Beyond her club success, Le Tissier has become a landmark figure for Guernsey. In June 2025, she was selected for England's UEFA Women's Euro 2025 squad, marking the first time a player from the island—male or female—represented England at a major senior tournament. While she did not feature on the pitch during the competition, her selection solidified her status as a pioneer. Off the field, she maintains a commitment to social impact, having pledged one percent of her salary to the charity Common Goal in May 2022. Despite sharing a surname with former England international Matt Le Tissier, she is not related to him, though she maintains a close connection to her roots and her step-brother, England international Alex Scott.
