In short: Melissa Hortman was a powerhouse in Minnesota politics, serving as the 61st Speaker of the House. From advocating for solar energy to negotiating complex police reforms, her legislative influence was vast. However, her career and life were cut short by a targeted attack that shocked the nation.

From 2019 to January 2025, the Democratic–Farmer–Labor figure Melissa Hortman held the position of 61st Speaker for the Minnesota House of Representatives. Her legislative legacy included authoring the state's solar energy standard and negotiating significant police reform in July 2020, which established an independent state unit to investigate officer-involved killings and sexual misconduct. She was also known for her work on transportation and environmental rights.

Her political ascent was marked by several key roles, including serving as House minority leader from 2017 to 2019 and as an assistant county attorney for Hennepin County. In 1997, she gained public attention by winning a $490,181 civil award for a client in a housing discrimination case, which was the largest such award in Minnesota state history at that time.

On June 14, 2025, Hortman and her husband, Mark, were assassinated in a politically motivated attack at their Brooklyn Park home. The assailant, 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter, impersonated a police officer during the attack, which also killed the couple's golden retriever, Gilbert. Following his arrest in Sibley County, Boelter received a sentence in July 2026 consisting of 40 years and two life terms in prison.

The tragedy prompted massive tributes, including a candlelight vigil at the Minnesota State Capitol and a funeral attended by over 1,500 people, including former President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Hortman was the first woman to lie in state in the Minnesota State Capitol rotunda, where her ashes were laid alongside her husband and their dog.
