From wrestling champion to bare-knuckle brawler: the volatile career of Melvin Guillard
In short: A Louisiana wrestling prodigy, Melvin Guillard transitioned from high school dominance to the intense world of mixed martial arts. His career spanned major promotions like the UFC and Bellator, marked by explosive knockouts, controversial no-contests, and a final pivot into the raw arena of bare-knuckle boxing.
Melvin Guillard’s journey began long before he stepped into an octagon. A standout athlete in Louisiana, he was a state wrestling champion at Bonnabel High School, earning the Class 5A MVP award and representing the Louisiana Junior National Team for two years. By age 16, he was already preparing for a professional fighting career.
Guillard's professional ascent included a stint on The Ultimate Fighter 2, where he faced Josh Burkman. His time in the UFC was defined by high-impact moments, such as his 36-second knockout of Dennis Siver at UFC 86, which earned him a Knockout of the Night bonus. However, his career was not without friction; he was once released from the UFC following a heated altercation with Rich Clementi, during which he attempted to attack the fighter after the bout.
As his career progressed, Guillard moved through various organizations, including the World Series of Fighting and Bellator MMA. His tenure in Bellator was marked by a victory over David Rickels that was later overturned due to a positive test for a non-performance-enhancing banned substance, resulting in a suspension. He later alleged that during a match in Rizin, officials altered the rules to prevent him from using soccer kicks or knees to a grounded opponent, a move he suspected was intended to protect his opponent, Takanori Gomi.
In his later years, Guillard transitioned to bare-knuckle boxing, competing in Bare Knuckle Boxing (BKB) and Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC). His career, which saw him compete across multiple weight classes including Welterweight, Lightweight, and Middleweight, officially concluded with his retirement in September 2025.
