In short: Melissa Villaseñor began her comedy career at a Hollywood summer camp when she was just fifteen. She eventually climbed from a semifinalist spot on reality television to becoming the first Latina performer promoted to repertory status on Saturday Night Live, where she spent six seasons mastering a vast range of celebrity impressions.

Born in Whittier, California, in 1987, Melissa Villaseñor built her early reputation through stand-up performances and a knack for mimicry. Her path to national recognition included an appearance on the sixth season of America's Got Talent, where she reached the semifinals, and a selection for the 2010 New Faces lineup at the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal. Despite an initial failed audition for Saturday Night Live in 2009, she successfully joined the cast in 2016 for the show's 42nd season.

Villaseñor holds a unique place in the history of the long-running sketch series. She is recognized as the second Latina cast member, following Noël Wells, and holds the distinction of being the first Latina to reach repertory status, a promotion she received in 2018 during the show's 44th season. Her tenure on the program lasted until the conclusion of the 47th season in 2022. Beyond her sketch work, her career has spanned voice acting for animated series like Adventure Time and Family Guy, as well as musical endeavors, including the 2019 release of her pop-punk album, Dreamer.

Her professional journey has not been without scrutiny. After joining the cast of Saturday Night Live, she faced criticism regarding social media posts from 2010 and 2011 that some labeled as racist. She subsequently removed nearly 2,000 of these messages. In a 2018 interview, she addressed the controversy, noting that she had been attempting to be edgy at the time and expressed a desire to present a more polished version of herself. Today, she continues to work as an illustrator, musician, and voice actor, recently lending her voice to the project Primos.
