In short: In 1994, a 19-year-old electrical engineering student at Columbia University walked into an open-casting call. He beat over a thousand hopefuls to land the lead in Spike Lee's Clockers. That serendipitous moment launched a career spanning iconic medical dramas, gritty urban classics, and high-stakes celebrity poker tournaments.

Born in Harlem in 1974, Mekhi Phifer was raised by his mother, an elementary school teacher. His path to fame began unexpectedly while he was pursuing an engineering degree. After his breakout role in Clockers, Phifer quickly established himself as a versatile performer, appearing in films like High School High, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, and the urban classic Paid in Full. His ability to inhabit complex characters earned him significant industry recognition, including a recurring role as Junior Bunk in Homicide: Life on the Street and a lead performance in the hip-hopera Carmen.

Phifer is perhaps best known for his six-year tenure as Dr. Greg Pratt on the long-running NBC medical drama ER. He joined the cast in April 2002 and departed in September 2008, during the show's 15th season. His character's exit was dramatic, following a fatal ambulance explosion that occurred during the season 14 finale. Throughout his time on the series, Phifer received two NAACP Image Award nominations, cementing his status as a staple of prime-time television. Beyond ER, he took on diverse roles, such as CIA officer Rex Matheson in Torchwood: Miracle Day and Agent Collins in White Collar.

Outside of acting, Phifer has cultivated a multifaceted professional life. He is an entrepreneur who owns several Athlete's Foot franchises in California and founded Third Reel Films in 2011 to support emerging filmmakers. His interests extend to competitive poker, where he famously won the fourth tournament of Celebrity Poker Showdown, defeating stars like Matthew Perry and Dennis Rodman. He also maintains a commitment to philanthropy, serving as chairman of the board for The Vine Group USA, a non-profit dedicated to providing educational resources to African universities, and supporting the charity Love Our Children USA through his participation in World Poker Tour events.
