The London police force that grew from a small group of constables into a national giant
In short: While it covers only the eighth-smallest geographic area of any UK territorial force, the Metropolitan Police is the largest by officer numbers. From its 1829 origins under Sir Robert Peel, the 'Met' has evolved into a complex machine responsible for everything from royal protection to counter-terrorism.
Founded in 1829 by Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel, the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) first appeared on London's streets on 29 September of that year. The force was established under the Metropolitan Police Act 1829, and a decade later, the 1839 Act further consolidated London's policing by absorbing various entities, such as the Bow Street Runners and the Thames River Police.
The force's identity is deeply tied to its history; it is often called 'Scotland Yard' or 'the Yard' after its original 19th-century headquarters at Great Scotland Yard. Today, the service is headquartered at New Scotland Yard on the Victoria Emblakment. While its primary jurisdiction covers the 32 London boroughs, it excludes the 'square mile' of the City of London, which is overseen by its own separate police force.
The Met's responsibilities extend far beyond local patrols. It manages the protection of the monarch, the royal family, and various government officials, and is responsible for counter-terrorism duties throughout the United Kingdom. It also oversees critical infrastructure, including Heathrow Airport and 164 foreign embassies and High Commissions. This immense workload is reflected in its scale: in 2016 alone, the force managed 3,500 protests and events.
The governance of the Met has also shifted. Historically, it was a department of the Home Office, making it the only British territorial force administered directly by central government. Since 2012, however, the Mayor of London has held responsibility for its governance through the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC).
