From volleyball scholarship to WWE: the multifaceted career of Mia Yim
In short: Long before she was performing under the name Michin on WWE SmackDown, Stephanie Hym Bell was an information technology student and a collegiate volleyball player. Her journey from the Virginia independent circuit to international wrestling stardom reveals a relentless drive and a mastery of diverse combat styles.
Born in Los Angeles on April 16, 1989, to an African American father and a Korean mother, Bell's path to professional wrestling was far from linear. Before entering the ring, she was a volleyball player at James Madison High School in Virginia and later played at the collegiate level for Virginia Union University on a scholarship while studying information technology.
Her professional wrestling career began in earnest after 18 months of training, making her debut on August 22, 2009, under the name Mia Yim. She built a foundation in the independent circuit, working for promotions like Jersey All Pro Wrestling and Ring of Honor, where she initially served as a valet for The Embassy starting in 2011.
Yim's versatility is highlighted by her international experience; in 2011, she trained in Japan with Universal Woman's Pro Wrestling Reina, which introduced her to Mexican lucha libre through their relationship with Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre. Her diverse technical skill set helped her secure multiple titles in several promotions, such as Shine, where she made history as the inaugural female to possess both the Shine and Shine Tag Team championships.
Her tenure in major promotions includes a significant stint in Impact Wrestling, where she competed as Jade and was a member of The Dollhouse. After a successful run in the second Mae Young Classic, she signed with WWE in 2018, eventually joining the main roster in 2020. Since her return to WWE in November 2022, she has been a prominent figure, most recently as a member of The O.C. until mid-2024.
